What is a question?
This is one of the most significant evolutionary trait responsible for a being to thrive.
When did man start asking questions? What preceded the question? Was it wonder, bewilderment, or may be Fear. Is it the primitive man or the civilised man who first asked a question? If so, whom/what did they ask?
Here's my view of how the question changed the fate of man
How could the primitive man get a chance to ask when there was danger lurking around. Only when the fear subsided his limbic brain allowed him to ask Questions. Because questions need answers for which he needs to think which can be done only when one is at peace which is a luxury that can not be afforded by the primitive man who is constantly in the survival mode.
The first probable question might be HOW. How could I survive, how can i kill that animal,
How could the slipped stone roll? How could the stones when rubbed caused spark. It was that spark that sparked the question in him. With that question came the curiosity to find the answer for which he needed to think which he might not be aware then but what he essentially wanted was time. With the sparks transitioning into fire made his living conditions conducive by providing warmth and protection during night when he need not hunt and had all the time to think and think more. He started looking up (for answers) and observed the night sky which was not possible earlier without the fire as he has to look around for any dangers and hide inside the caves. Hence his vision towards the sky started and found the magnanimous celestial bodies. He then got the question WHERE? And started relating his position with respect to the predominantly fixed star system. When he started observing the shift in the stars is when he asked the question WHY? and started asking questions often to himself in an as yet unknown language (as it was not yet developed). This ritual of daily observation of the stars and systems awakened the latent ability to observe and imagine which was another significant evolutionary milestone.
Now with the concept of stars and imagination he started connecting the dots and formed patterns which started periodically repeating hence creating the idea of time which he's assumed to be reference. With the concept of time came the presence of past and future. With time and pattern he started connecting past to future therby shifting the consciousness from PRESENT.
Now that the concept of past and future is awakened in him he started learning from the past experiences and anticipating the future needs.
With the advent of future his idea of preservation came into existence. Preservation gave him time to think about in the day too as there is no much need to hunt/gather. With this extra time he started to indulge in other non survival activities like community building and welfare/ entertainment etc.
With the next generation being in a safe and secure environment the need for physical strength declined and the resources of nature were diverted to increasing the capacity of the brain leading to a continuous increase in the size of the heads.
